Putting is often cited as the most important part of golf, accounting for nearly half the shots taken on the course. Unsurprisingly, mastering your putting stroke and finding the right putter for your game can make a dramatic difference in your scores. The Importance of Putting

While driving distance and iron play are important, putting is where most golfers can see the biggest improvement in their scores. Shaving just a few putts per round can often take several strokes off your total. Consider this: if you average 36 to 34 would save you 2 strokes. That could be two birdies or two huge par saves! Many golfers, and I know this personally, don’t spend time after a bad round reflecting on that one wayward drive. Rather, we pine over that “easy 5 footer that we totally could’ve made”.

Putting also has a compounding effect. Making more putts means you’ll be more confident over the ball, meaning you’ll stroke it well and continue making them. It’s a cycle that can really boost your scores.

To become a great putter, consistent practice is key. Spend time on the green and focus on developing a smooth, consistent stroke. Understanding speed and line

In putting, it is important to not only read the green correctly, but also to understand how speed and line interact. You can start a ball on two very different lines, but both lines can lead to that ball dropping-it just depends on your speed. This is all easy to say and much harder to see and feel. With the BigTilt platform however, you can see start lines that correspond to the amount of tilt in the platform and therefore the slope of the green. You will be given different starting line options and can experiment with your speed in response to these lines. The way you visualize a putt falling into the hole is extremely important, and this technology allows you to practice this concept.

Short and Long Putts

With the BigTilt platform, you can practice putts anywhere from under 4 feet to 15 feet away from the hole. You can tilt the platform to the left or to the right depending on your preference, or you can practice super-straight putts and dial in your stroke. With the option to practice both the long and short putts, you can see how the influence of slope differs according to distance.

It’s also important to find the right putter for your stroke. Putter designs vary in things like head shape, face angle, length, and grip style. Golf clubs come in a wide variety of designs and specifications, and selecting the right ones can make a big difference in your game. Understanding the key differences between golf club types and how to match them to your swing and skill level is an important part of improving your performance on the course.

Club Types

I’m sure most of you reading this post have a good understanding of what golf clubs make up your bag, but just for fun, here are the main types of golf clubs;

1. 1. Drivers – These are the longest clubs in your bag, designed to hit the ball the farthest off the tee. Drivers have large, aerodynamic club heads with flat club faces to maximize distance.
   2. Woods – Also used off the tee or for longer approach shots, woods have a larger club head than irons. They come in fairway wood and hybrid varieties.
   3. Hybrids – These clubs combine design elements of both woods and irons, giving you the distance of a wood with the increased control of an iron. Hybrids are increasingly popular, especially among newer golfers, as they are more forgiving than long irons.
   4. Irons – Irons are used for approach shots and have a more compact, angled clubhead compared to woods. They are often numbered, from a 9 iron, anywhere up to a 3 iron (or even a 2 or 1 iron-though we would not recommend these unless you think you’re Tiger Woods) with each number representing a different loft and therefore, shot distance.
   5. Wedges – Wedges are specialized irons with even higher loft angles, used for shorter approach shots, bunker play, and chipping around the green. Common wedge lofts are 48-60 degrees. Feel is extremely important when it comes to your wedges, and they can be designed for different kinds of players and swing types.
   6. Putters – Putters are flat, and used (almost) exclusively for putting on the green. Again, feel is imperative when it comes to picking your putter, and it’s important to understand what each style offers you.

Choosing the Right Clubs

When selecting golf clubs, you’ll want to consider factors like your swing speed, ball flight, and launch angle. Slower swing speeds generally require more loft, while faster swingers need less loft to optimize distance.

It’s also important to get properly fitted for your clubs. Many golf shops and club fitters can analyze your swing and recommend the right combination of club types, lofts, shafts, and grips to match your game. Properly fitted clubs can significantly improve your consistency and performance.
